Today is March 12, 2015 and also happens to be my 23rd birthday or what I like to call birthdays…”My Day of Food”
Along our journey of eating, I received one of the most memorable birthday gifts so far. We were enjoying our Birthday Desserts at an amazing patisserie called Smeterling and sat next to a wonderful man who helped us make the tough decision as to which cakes we were going to have!
His English was quite good and we continued to have a nice conversation with the man. He started to pack up and leave but before he left, he walked back over to me and said Happy Birthday and “I want you to always remember this day in this country.” I was so speechless!
In preparation for this trip to Buenos Aires, people constantly warned Rob and I that the city was very dangerous. These warnings caused us to live in fear for the first week, but all we have experienced here so far is such kindness. A newly wed couple has opened their home to us for a traditional Assado (Argentine BBQ), a local artist on the streets invited me share mate with him, and a stranger bought me homemade macaroons for my birthday!
I never got the mans name, but whoever you are…THANK YOU!
There is so much kindness in this world that is overshadowed by fear, violence, hate, and crime. Of course there is danger everywhere, but we can’t live in those shadows.
This has opened up my eyes once again, that just one random act of kindness truly makes a difference. These small acts have helped reshape my idea of Buenos Aires and I only hope to continue paying it forward.
